For Nepal, innovation in medicine is not only about discovering new medicines. It is also about finding better ways to make healthcare more accessible, reliable and efficient.
Digital health is becoming an important part of this journey. Telemedicine, electronic medical records and other digital technologies can help connect patients and healthcare professionals, particularly where distance and limited resources make access to healthcare more challenging.
Nepal has already started taking steps in this direction. The Ministry of Health and Population and WHO have supported teleconsultation services, while electronic medical record systems are being introduced in hospitals across the country. WHO reported that EMR implementation had expanded to 16 hospitals across Nepal during 2024–2025.
The country’s Digital Health programme is also working toward better interoperability and the wider use of digital technologies across the healthcare system.
For Nepal, the real opportunity is to use innovation where it matters most—bringing quality healthcare closer to people, improving access to information, reducing dependence on paper-based systems and helping healthcare professionals make better-informed decisions.
Innovation in medicine is ultimately not about technology alone. It is about using technology and knowledge to make healthcare better for people across Nepal.
